Background Naraku is the result of a merging between a human and a few thousand miscellaneous youki. He is not the same as either of the ingredients, but he still loves the priestess Kikyo as he did when he was a human. He was completely immobile as a human, so Kikyo and her little sister Kaede tended to him. All he did was lay in a cave thinking about Kikyo's beauty, and it got a bit out of control. Naraku struggles with the fact that he, like his enemy Inuyasha, is a hanyo (half-demon). He is always trying to find ways to purge his humanity and strengthen his youki. His ultimate goal is to gather the Shikon shards in order to expell his human half and become a full demon - which is the same goal as Inuyasha's original one. He wants Inuyasha dead because he is an obstacle to this goal and also because Kikyo once loved him.
Naraku also has several forms. He usually appears as a kind of a voodoo doll (called a kugutsu) which is covered by a baboon skin. He manipulates this form from far away so that he cannot be directly injured. His other form is human in appearance, but he still has all the powers of a youkai. He actually stole this new look from a young village lord prior to episode 35.

First Appearances Naraku makes appearances throughout the series. You find out that he was the guiding force behind most things that move the plot along.

Alter-Egos Onigumo - The paralyzed human thief that became Naraku after merging with thousands of youkai (demons). Onigumo lived in a cave near the demon exterminators' village, where Kikyo was priestess. Kikyo and her little sister Kaede fed and visited him every day, and he developed a perverted obsession with her.
Musou - Naraku's detachment; Naraku tried to separate from Onigumo, which is his human half, because it made him weak. The separation didn't completely work, and Musou was formed. Musou doesn't have a face of his own, so he kills people to steal their faces. He also shares an obsession with Kikyo as Onigumo did. Naraku discovered that he still needed this half in order to be powerful, so he absorbed it back into himself. Interestingly enough, this detachment is more a part of Naraku than any other; however, he also despises him for what he did to Kikyo and longs to be independent.
